Step Into The Unknown

Dear Inkwalkers,

As writers, we often seek comfort in what we know – familiar genres, themes, character types, etc. We tend to cling to writing routines and well-worn paths that feel safe. Sometimes the writing advice “Write what you know,” is detrimental.

It is in the unknown where the magic happens. Writing is all about pushing boundaries, creating worlds, and bringing our imagination to life. It doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to be written.

Writing only what we know can be comforting, but it can also be limiting. When we start pushing boundaries, opening up to unfamiliar concepts and writing styles, it forces us to think differently. Creatively. It is when we step outside of our comfort zone, our brains are challenged in new ways, and the spark of creativity that comes from that is unmatched.

Growth only happens when we challenge ourselves – pushing past our fears and self-doubt. It is in in the moments of vulnerability with ourselves that create the opportunity for personal and artistic growth. By embracing new experiences, emotions, and themes, we learn to expand our craft. We begin to trust our instincts, face challenges head-on in creative ways, and stretch our skills. Growth doesn’t happen by repeating the same patterns – it happens when we take risks and go where our creativity takes us.

As writers, we take the world around us as inspiration to craft a world that pushes the limits or to explain why the world is the way it is. And that is the beauty of writing. Not knowing what to write, to say, to research, to create, is the start of writing. Not knowing leads to finding out, and that is the first step of the adventure. Whether it is through trying a new genre, writing about an unfamiliar culture, or exploring a deeper layer of emotion, embracing the unknown will keep your writing fresh, exciting, and full of endless possibilities.

It is how this blog came to be.

So, take a step into the unknown and leave the need to be perfect behind. Pick up a pen or a computer, and start writing. You never know where your next adventure will take you. And who knows… You might find new opportunities along the way.
